The Dash

A few weeks ago, we attended St. Anthony's mass because we weren't going to be able to make it to mass at our church. Father Bill (who married us) was filling in for their priest and he delivered a beautiful message that was inspired by this poem. I hope you enjoy!

The Dash
by Linda Ellis
I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke of the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard;
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less qauck to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.
So when your eulogy is being read
With your life's actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

Happy 6 Month Birthday Anden!!

Anden, what are you up to at 6 months?

(Poor baby, you have a nasty cold right now,
so you weren't in a real smiley mood this morning.)

~ You have changed so much in the last month. You are now rolling everywhere, sitting up for a few moments by yourself, and CRAWLING (backwards.)

~ You wake up around 6:30-7:00 and eat breakfast, you take a bottle around 8:00, nap mid-morning, you eat lunch (1 veggie, 1 fruit), then another bottle around 12:00, nap most of the afternoon, wake up and have another bottle around 4:00, eat supper (1 veggie, 1 fruit), and then another bottle and head to bed around 8:00.

~ You've tried all the Stage-1 Gerber foods, your favorites being ANY fruit. In fact, at each meal we have to have you eat all your veggie before we give you any fruit or you fuss at us because once you get a taste of your fruit you want nothing to do with your veggies!

~ You LOVE apple juice and you'll even drink it out of a sippy cup!

~ You've tried the little Gerber puffs and you're not sure what to think of them.

~ You're such an easy-going baby. The only time you fuss is when you're hungry.

~ You're ticklish EVERYWHERE! You're neck and back, you're cheeks, you're armpits, your belly, your hips, you're little... I mean BIG thighs, the backs of your knees, and all the way down to your toes.

~ You are wearing 12 month clothes and size 3 diapers.

~ You've grown out of your infant carry-seat, so now you're in a rear-facing convertable carseat.

~ You're so snuggly and I think that's my favorite thing about you... oh scratch that, everything about you is my favorite thing about you. You're amazing and we are so blessed to have you!

Happy 5th Birthday Jacob Andrew!!

Five years ago today, Jake made his arrival into this world.

That day was filled with so much happiness and love.
Of course, his sister (who was not even 2 at the time)
was much more interested in the telephone on the hospital bed
than she was her brand new baby brother.

And here he is today, five years later.
ALL BOY...
loves hunting, farming, and playing ball.

Target practice with his new bow and arrow.

Of course Kaylee had to give it a shot too!

Not too bad for a 6 year old!

Happy Birthday Jake! We love you so very much!
